January 29th Meeting

President Garry Briesacher called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation.  The following guests from Ottawa Elementary Schools were welcomed:  Superintendent Cleve Threadgill, Shepherd Middle School principal Lori Kimes, and Shepherd M.S. dean of students Gary Windy.

Sergeants at Arms Tom and Jane quizzed the members on information most 5th graders know, and we did pretty well!  Judy’s ticket was drawn for the $20 50/50 pot.  Mike Matteson received a special award, the Rilly Cup, the 1st annual traveling prize for selling the most amaryllises (amarylli) this year!

Rick made a motion to approve by acclamation the election of officers for next year:  Mike F-President, Mike M-Vice president, Sue-Secretary, Eldon-Treasurer, Nancy-Foundation, Jane-Grants, Karen-Membership, and Jenny & Dorothy-Youth scholarships.  Motion was seconded by Keith, and the motion passed by voice vote.

Our guests from Ottawa Elementary presented “Exploring the World of STEM,” a school district initiative to provide authentic education in science, technology, engineering, and math to students in grades 7-8.  The district is hoping to roll out this project in the 2017-18 school year, utilizing the home ec rooms @ Shepherd.  Seed money is being provided from the Spangler Endowment fund, and the district is working to obtain financial partners for the rest.

Rilly Award

This shows a full-color rendering of the new Sunrise Rotary traveling award, the Rilly Award, which was presented to Mike Matteson for this year’s highest amaryllis sales.

Mike is enjoying his accolades, but he knows that others WILL be vying to steal it from him next year!
